I am so honored today to share about my friend Leah’s new book Intentional Love: 31 Ways to Love Your Husband with Purpose. Leah and her husband Matt have written companion books that are the perfect read for moms and dads who are looking for that little something extra to help them prioritize each other in the midst chaotic family life. I was super encouraged. Here’s why…
So many marriage books speak in perfect world scenarios. So when I finish reading them, there are times I’m a little bummed, missing the point. Yes of course I see how having no real world restrictions on time, money, and childcare combined are the fertile soil of a great marriage. But what about NOW when I’m in the trenches of raising my family on a shoestring budget, while my husband’s in school, and we aren’t sleeping at night? How can we be intentional in our love toward one another TODAY when our very real, very imperfect life’s goal is to simply survive this season before launching into the next?
That’s why I love this book.
Matt and Leah are regular people trying to parent their kids as best as they can, just like Mike and I. They’re busy juggling the demands of life and family with little-to-no sleep as is every other parent on earth. They haven’t arrived, but they keep showing up, making their marriage a priority. Making each other a priority – and their effort encourages me that I can make MY marriage a priority too – even in our less-than-perfect-world scenario.
This is not a step-one, step-two, step-three kind of book that (voila!) creates a happy marriage. In no way do Matt and Leah take the perspective of an expert or know-it-all, rather they come alongside as a friend who loves you, wanting God’s best for you, in all stages of married life. The chapters are quick but thought provoking, and include prompts (and space) for journaling, ideas to practically incorporate the days topic into your right-this-instant-life, and discussion questions to complete with your spouse.
Mike and I are in the middle of this 31 ways journey – finished with our own reading and looking forward to connecting as a couple. I am so thankful for the gift that Matt and Leah have created through their work. This book is the lifeline between point A and point B – starting out in wedded bliss, and staying there through the growing family years.
